West Cork

Cork · Ireland

County Cork is Ireland's largest county and one of its most varied. To the east of Cork city lies Cobh — a Victorian cathedral town built on a steep ridge above the harbour, where the Titanic made its last port of call. To the west, the peninsulas of West Cork push out into the Atlantic in a series of mountain ridges and sea inlets that rival Kerry for scenery with a fraction of the crowds.

Blarney Castle draws most first-time visitors — it's one of the most-visited sites in Ireland. The Stone of Eloquence and the clifftop battlements are the obvious draw, but the castle gardens are underrated and worth an extra hour. Cobh is a compact half-day: the cathedral on the ridge, the Titanic Experience on the waterfront, and a good lunch looking out at the great harbour.

Kinsale, 20 minutes south of Cork city, is widely regarded as having the best restaurant scene outside Dublin. It makes a natural base for the eastern end of West Cork, close to Blarney, Cobh, and the wild headland of the Old Head of Kinsale. Further west, Skibbereen and Baltimore anchor the quieter, wilder half of the county.

Suggested itinerary

1

Cork city + Cobh

25 min to Cobh

Arrive at Cork Airport (ORK) and settle into Cork city. Walk the English Market — one of Europe's best covered food markets — before driving to Cobh on Cork Harbour. The Titanic Experience tells the story of the liner's last port of call; the Victorian cathedral on the ridge above the waterfront is worth the climb for the harbour view. Return to Cork city for dinner.

2

Blarney + Kinsale

30 min between sites

Blarney Castle opens at 9am — arrive early to beat tour buses. Allow 90 minutes for the castle, Stone of Eloquence and the Rock Close gardens below the tower. Drive south to Kinsale — 20 minutes from Cork city — one of the best places to eat in Ireland outside Dublin. The old harbour, Charles Fort and the restaurant scene reward an overnight stay.

3

Mizen Head + return

1.5 hrs to Mizen Head

Drive southwest from Kinsale to Mizen Head — Ireland's southwesternmost point, with a suspension footbridge over a sea chasm and a working signal station. The road from Skibbereen through Ballydehob to Mizen Head is one of the great West Cork drives. Return via the N71 coast road through Clonakilty to Cork city, or stop at Old Midleton Distillery (30 min east of Cork city) before flying out.

Highlights

  • Blarney Castle — 15th-century tower house with the famous Stone of Eloquence; the grounds and Rock Close gardens reward a longer visit
  • Cobh — the last port of call for the Titanic; a Victorian cathedral town on a ridge above Cork Harbour with a strong maritime heritage
  • Mizen Head — Ireland's southwesternmost point, with sea cliffs, a suspension footbridge over a chasm, and a working signal station
  • Kinsale — a compact harbour town with a reputation for excellent restaurants and a 17th-century star fort above the bay
  • Old Midleton Distillery — one of the world's largest pot stills, and the original home of Jameson Irish Whiskey
  • Beara Peninsula — quieter than the Ring of Kerry, with Healy Pass, Dursey Island cable car and Glengarriff forest walks
  • Baltimore & Sherkin Island — the sailing village at the western end of West Cork, with ferry access to offshore islands
  • Lough Hyne — Europe's first marine nature reserve, a saltwater tidal lake connected to the sea by a narrow channel

Local tips

  • Blarney Castle gets very busy with tour buses — arrive at opening (9am) or in the late afternoon when they've left
  • Cobh is easy from Cork city: the train from Kent Station takes 25 minutes and stops right on the waterfront
  • Mizen Head bridge closes in severe weather — check conditions before making the 90-minute drive from Cork city
  • Stay in Kinsale or Skibbereen rather than driving from Cork city each day — distances look short on a map but the roads are slow and winding
  • The Beara Peninsula is far less crowded than the Ring of Kerry and genuinely spectacular — two days is ideal if you have the time
  • Cork's English Market in the city centre is one of the best covered food markets in Europe — worth an hour on any Cork stop

Getting there

Cork Airport (ORK) has direct flights from London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and other European hubs. Cork city is 15 minutes from the airport. A car is essential for exploring west of the city — Mizen Head, Kinsale and the Beara Peninsula have limited public transport.
