Blarney Castle is a medieval tower house built in 1446 by Cormac Laidir MacCarthy, Lord of Muskerry. The castle is famous internationally for the Blarney Stone, set into the parapet battlements near the top of the tower — visitors who lean backwards over the castle wall to kiss it are said to receive the gift of eloquence, or "the gift of the gab." The origin of this tradition is unclear, but it was well established by the 18th century and has made Blarney one of the most visited heritage sites in Ireland.
The castle itself is a substantial ruin — four storeys of the original tower house survive, and climbing to the top involves a narrow spiral staircase. The views from the battlements over the Cork countryside are the practical reward for making the ascent. At ground level, the estate grounds include a poison garden (with labelled toxic plants), a woodland walk, Wishing Steps, a rock cave and a restored Victorian garden.
Blarney village, immediately outside the castle gates, has a cluster of shops and restaurants. Cork city is 8 km away. The combination of castle history, the grounds and the symbolic appeal of the stone makes Blarney a strong half-day stop from Cork.

Getting There
Common questions
How much does Blarney Castle cost?
Adult tickets cost around €20 (2025), including access to the castle grounds and Rock Close gardens. Book online in advance — door prices are higher and queues build quickly mid-morning. The castle itself is free to explore (the tower interior has no additional charge beyond entry).
Is the Blarney Stone worth kissing?
The Stone of Eloquence (Blarney Stone) is set into the parapet at the top of the castle tower. To kiss it, you lie on your back and lean backwards over the edge — there are iron rails and an attendant. Most visitors do it for the experience and story. If heights or the hygiene aspect concern you, skip it and enjoy the extensive grounds and Rock Close gardens instead.
How long does Blarney Castle take?
The tower (stone kissing, battlements) takes 30–45 minutes including the queue. Add 45–60 minutes for the Rock Close gardens, which are genuinely excellent and often overlooked by visitors focused only on the stone. Allow two hours in total for a proper visit.
When should I visit Blarney Castle to avoid tour buses?
Arrive at opening (9am) or after 4pm — tour buses dominate the mid-morning to early afternoon period. Weekdays are consistently quieter than weekends. The queue for the Blarney Stone itself can be 45–60 minutes long at peak times.
