Dublin & Day Trips

Dublin & East · Ireland

Dublin is one of Europe's most approachable capital cities — small enough to walk most of the centre, large enough to fill several days. The Georgian streets, Trinity College, Guinness Storehouse, Kilmainham Gaol and an excellent restaurant and pub scene are all within easy reach of each other.

But Dublin's real value for visitors is as a base for the surrounding region. Within 90 minutes of the city are some of Ireland's most extraordinary sites: Newgrange, a 5,200-year-old passage tomb that predates both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids; Glendalough, a sixth-century monastic settlement in a glacial Wicklow valley; and Powerscourt, Ireland's most celebrated garden estate.

Most visitors split their time: two days in the city, two days exploring outwards. That's enough to cover the main Dublin attractions without rushing, then hit Glendalough and Powerscourt on one day and Newgrange and the Boyne Valley on another.

Suggested itinerary

1

Dublin city

Kilmainham Gaol (book timed entry in advance) or the Guinness Storehouse in the morning. Trinity College and the Book of Kells in the afternoon — both are within a 10-minute walk of each other. Evening in the Liberties or Temple Bar.

2

Wicklow Mountains day trip

1 hr from Dublin

Powerscourt Estate opens at 9am — allow 2 hours for the terraced gardens and Triton Lake. Continue 25 minutes to Glendalough for the monastic ruins and Upper Lake walk (easy 1.5 hr loop). Return to Dublin by evening via the scenic Military Road over the Sally Gap.

3

Boyne Valley day trip

45 min from Dublin

Drive north to the Brú na Bóinne visitor centre. The Newgrange OPW guided tour is the core experience — book well in advance online. Combine with Hill of Tara (20 min south of the visitor centre) for the political and ceremonial centre of early Irish kingship. The EPIC Museum in Dublin's Docklands is a strong alternative if you're not making this trip.

Highlights

  • Guinness Storehouse — seven floors of brewing history at St James's Gate Brewery, with a 360° Gravity Bar at the top
  • Newgrange — 5,200-year-old passage tomb aligned to the winter solstice sunrise; one of the world's great prehistoric monuments
  • Glendalough — St Kevin's sixth-century monastic ruins in a glacial Wicklow valley, two hours of easy walking trails
  • Powerscourt Estate — 47 acres of formal terraced gardens, the Great Sugarloaf as backdrop, and Ireland's highest waterfall nearby
  • Kilmainham Gaol — where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were executed; one of Ireland's most powerful historic sites
  • Trinity College & Book of Kells — Ireland's oldest university and home to the 9th-century illuminated manuscript
  • Phoenix Park — 1,750 acres of parkland with 600 wild fallow deer; one of the largest enclosed city parks in Europe
  • Wicklow Mountains — the hills start 20 minutes south of Dublin, offering walking routes from an hour to a full-day traverse

Local tips

  • Book the Newgrange OPW tour online in advance — timed entry is limited and sells out weeks ahead in summer
  • Glendalough gets crowded with coach tours on summer weekends — go on a weekday, or arrive before 9:30am
  • Powerscourt Gardens and Powerscourt Waterfall are 6 km apart and have separate entry fees — you need a car to visit both
  • Dublin city centre is genuinely walkable in 20 minutes — use the Hop-On Hop-Off once to orient yourself, then walk
  • Dublin pubs are better on Sunday afternoons than Saturday nights — less tourist-heavy, more locals
  • Parking in Dublin city centre is expensive. Stay near the DART rail line and use the train into town
