Mizen Head

Co. Cork · 1.5–2 hours

Mizen Head is the most south-westerly point of Ireland. A concrete arched footbridge, built in 1909 to provide access to the signal station, connects the mainland cliff to a small headland island where the original fog signal station and lighthouse equipment are preserved. Crossing the bridge — 45 metres above the Atlantic — is the central experience of the visit. The views from the headland are in three directions: south toward the Atlantic, west into the open ocean and north along the Cork coastline.

The signal station itself, now a visitor centre, was staffed year-round from its construction until 1993 when automation made it redundant. The exhibits cover the history of the station, the lighthouse service and local maritime history. The headland is the southern terminus of the Wild Atlantic Way — the 2,500 km coastal route that runs from Malin Head in Donegal.

The drive to Mizen Head from the nearest town (Schull, 25 km) passes through some of the most remote scenery in Cork — narrow roads through bog and rock, with the Atlantic visible periodically on the left. The Sheep's Head Peninsula, the quieter neighbour to the north, is worth the 45-minute detour if you're in the area.

Highlights

  • The most south-westerly point of Ireland — the southern terminus of the Wild Atlantic Way
  • The arched footbridge (1909) crosses 45 m above the Atlantic to reach the signal station headland
  • Atlantic views in three directions from the headland — visibility can extend 60+ km on clear days
  • The signal station was staffed year-round from 1909 to 1993 — the exhibits cover the lighthouse keeper life
  • The drive from Schull through Goleen is one of the most remote and scenic approaches on the Wild Atlantic Way

Good to know

  • Allow extra time for the drive from Schull or Bantry — the road is narrow and slower than the map suggests.
  • The visitor centre café is open in season — last food option before the headland.
  • Combine with the Sheep's Head Peninsula (45 min north) for a full west Cork coastal day.
  • The bridge crossing is exposed in high wind — not suitable for visitors with severe vertigo.
  • Bantry (45 min east) has good accommodation and a strong food scene if you're staying overnight in this area.

Best Time to Visit

May–Sep for the footbridge and full signal station experience; Apr–Oct for OPW opening hours. Winter Atlantic storms viewed from the mainland side of the bridge are spectacular even when the island itself is closed.

Common questions

What is at Mizen Head?

Mizen Head Signal Station sits on a tiny island connected to the mainland by a suspension footbridge over a dramatic cliff-edge chasm. The site was Ireland's most powerful radio signal station and guided ships through the shipping lanes. The visitor centre covers the history of the station and Ireland's lighthouse service. The bridge crossing with Atlantic views in three directions is the main experience.

How far is Mizen Head from Cork city?

Mizen Head is about 100km southwest of Cork city — approximately 1.5–2 hours by car. It is at the very tip of the Mizen Peninsula. The drive from Skibbereen or Bantry through Schull and Crookhaven is itself scenic and worth taking slowly.

Is Mizen Head worth the detour?

If you are already in west Cork, yes — it is one of the most dramatic cliff-edge viewpoints in Ireland and the suspension bridge crossing is memorable. As a standalone trip from Cork city, the journey is significant. Most people visit Mizen Head as part of a west Cork circuit including Bantry, Sheep's Head and the Ring of Beara.

How much does Mizen Head cost?

Adult entry is around €7 (2025). The site includes the visitor centre, the bridge crossing and the signal station buildings. The car park is free. Open from mid-March to October; winter hours are reduced. Check current opening times before making a special trip in shoulder season.
