The east and midlands of Ireland contain the densest concentration of early medieval and prehistoric sites in the country. Long overlooked by visitors rushing west to the Atlantic coast, this stretch of limestone plains, river valleys and low hills is where Irish civilisation took root thousands of years ago.
Newgrange and its sister tombs in the Boyne Valley predate Stonehenge by 500 years. The Rock of Cashel — a roofless cathedral and round tower perched on a natural limestone outcrop — was the seat of the Kings of Munster for 600 years. Glendalough, in its glacial Wicklow valley, was one of the most important monastic centres in early Christian Europe.
The region is compact enough to circuit by car in three to four days: Dublin, the Boyne Valley, Kilkenny, the Rock of Cashel, then back through Wicklow. Kilkenny city makes the best midlands base — medieval streets, a great castle, and some of the best food and craft beer in Ireland.
Drive north to the Brú na Bóinne visitor centre. The Newgrange OPW guided tour — book online in advance — is the centrepiece: a 5,200-year-old passage tomb aligned to the winter solstice sunrise. Combine with Hill of Tara on the return — the ritual and political centre of early Irish kingship with sweeping views across the plains of Meath. Stay in Navan, Drogheda or Trim overnight.
Drive south through the Midlands to Kilkenny. Kilkenny Castle anchors the medieval city — allow 90 minutes for the castle and its 50-acre park. Walk the Medieval Mile from the castle to St Canice's Cathedral: the narrow lanes, craft shops and Black Abbey are the highlights. Kilkenny is one of Ireland's best food towns — two nights lets you do it properly.
Rock of Cashel is best in the late afternoon when tour buses have left and the light rakes across the medieval walls. The roofless 13th-century cathedral, round tower and Romanesque Cormac's Chapel sit on a natural limestone outcrop 60 metres (about 200 feet) above the Tipperary plain. Combine with Cahir Castle 15 minutes south — one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Ireland. Return to Kilkenny or drive to Wicklow overnight.
Drive northeast into the Wicklow Mountains. Glendalough — St Kevin's sixth-century monastic ruins in a glacial valley — is best visited early before coach tours arrive. The Upper Lake walk (1.5 hrs, easy) gives solitude even in summer. Powerscourt is 30 minutes north: 47 acres of formal terraced gardens with the Great Sugarloaf as backdrop. Return to Dublin via the M11 for the evening.
