Loop Head Lighthouse

Co. Clare · 1.5–3 hours

Loop Head is the southwestern tip of the Clare peninsula, where the Shannon estuary ends and the open Atlantic begins. The headland is a broad expanse of flagstone platform meeting 60-metre sea cliffs, with the lighthouse tower — in operation since 1670, current structure 1854 — marking the point. On clear days the Aran Islands are visible to the north and the Kerry mountains to the south; Loop Head also provides some of the clearest views of the full width of the Shannon mouth.

The lighthouse became one of a network of Irish Heritage Lighthouses open to visitors in summer. Tours of the tower run several times daily and include the lamp room, the original lens mechanisms and the keepers' accommodation. The headland itself is freely accessible year-round and is excellent for seabirds (razorbills, choughs, peregrine), dolphins and, in autumn, seals pupping on the lower rock shelves.

The road to Loop Head runs through Kilkee, a traditional Clare seaside resort with excellent cliff walks, and continues along the North Clare coast past Kilkee Bay and Carrigaholt — a quiet, undeveloped stretch of coastline that most visitors miss entirely while driving directly between Kilrush and the Cliffs of Moher.

Highlights

  • The westernmost tip of Clare — the Shannon meets the Atlantic, with Aran Islands visible to the north
  • Working lighthouse (1854 tower) with guided tours including the lamp room and keeper's quarters
  • Excellent seabird and dolphin watching — choughs, razorbills, peregrines and regular bottlenose dolphins
  • The Bridges of Ross (4 km north) — natural sea arches in the Loop Head flagstone, accessible on foot
  • The undeveloped North Clare coast road — far quieter than the Cliffs of Moher and equally dramatic in places

Good to know

  • Lighthouse tours run in summer only (June–September) — the headland is free to visit year-round.
  • The Bridges of Ross sea arches are 4 km north of the lighthouse and require a 30-minute walk from the road.
  • Kilkee (15 km north) is worth a stop — the horseshoe bay, the cliff walk and the Pollock Holes sea pools.
  • Dolphin Watch boat trips run from Carrigaholt (20 km) into the Shannon estuary — one of Europe's most reliable dolphin watching spots.
  • The Cliffs of Moher are 65 km north — Loop Head as a stop-off en route from Kerry or Limerick makes good geographic sense.

Best Time to Visit

Apr–Sep for the full visitor experience including lighthouse tours (pre-book essential). Winter Atlantic squalls viewed from the mainland headland are spectacular but the cliff paths can be dangerous in high winds.

Common questions

Can I go to the top of Loop Head Lighthouse?

Yes — guided tours of the lighthouse tower run in summer from the lighthouse base. The tour climbs 115 steps to the lantern room with panoramic views over the Loop Head Peninsula, the Shannon estuary and the Atlantic. Tours must be booked through GetYourGuide or directly at the site. The surrounding headland is freely accessible year-round.

How far is Loop Head from Kilkee or Kilrush?

Loop Head lighthouse is at the western tip of the Loop Head Peninsula in County Clare. From Kilkee it is about 22km — 30 minutes by car. From Kilrush it is 35km (45 minutes). The drive along the peninsula from either town, with sea cliffs and Atlantic views, is half the experience.

Is there an entry fee for visiting Loop Head?

The headland itself is free to visit at any time. The lighthouse tower tour charges a fee (around €10 adults, booked in advance). The coast on either side of the lighthouse point has excellent cliff walking — the Loop Head Way is a 15km loop taking 4–5 hours for experienced walkers.

What else is there to do at Loop Head?

The sea cliffs and headland walking are the main draw. The nearby villages of Carrigaholt (with a dolphin-watching boat trip on the Shannon) and Kilkee (a Victorian resort town with a dramatic cliff walk) are both within 30 minutes. The entire Loop Head Peninsula is one of the most undervisited parts of Ireland.
