Dingle Peninsula & Slea Head Drive

Co. Kerry · Full day (or overnight)

The Dingle Peninsula extends 50 km into the Atlantic from the Kerry mainland, reaching one of the most westerly points of Ireland — and of Europe. It is a Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) area and the landscape reflects a continuous human presence of at least 3,000 years. Over 2,000 archaeological monuments have been recorded on the peninsula, including early Christian beehive huts (clocháns), ring forts, ogham stones and the Gallarus Oratory — a dry-stone church built around 800 AD that has stood without mortar for over 1,200 years.

Dingle town is the main base — a working fishing port with good restaurants (seafood particularly) and traditional music pubs. Fungie the dolphin lived in Dingle Bay for over 30 years and was one of Ireland's most famous wild animals; he disappeared in 2020. The town and its surroundings justify an overnight stay.

The Slea Head Drive is a 50 km circular road from Dingle that follows the western coastline past the main archaeological sites, with views over the Blasket Islands. The Great Blasket, the largest of the islands, was inhabited until 1953 when the remaining 22 islanders were evacuated to the mainland. The island produced three major works of literature in the Irish language. On clear days from Slea Head, you can see the twin peaks of Skellig Michael rising from the Atlantic, 13 km offshore.

Highlights

  • Gallarus Oratory — a dry-stone boat-shaped church from around 800 AD, still watertight after 1,200 years
  • Views from Slea Head over the Blasket Islands and Skellig Michael (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Over 2,000 recorded archaeological monuments on the peninsula — the highest density in Ireland
  • Dingle town has excellent seafood restaurants and nightly traditional music sessions in the pubs
  • The Great Blasket Island was inhabited until 1953 — the islanders' literature is among the most distinctive in Irish

Good to know

  • Drive the Slea Head Drive anticlockwise from Dingle for better road logistics and photography light.
  • Book dinner in Dingle in advance — the best restaurants fill quickly in summer.
  • Skellig Michael boat trips leave from Portmagee and Ballinskelligs (1 hour south) — book months in advance.
  • The Connor Pass (456 m) between Dingle and Tralee is the highest mountain pass in Ireland — the views from the top are worth the drive.
  • The Blasket Centre at Dunquin tells the story of the island community — a good stop before looking at the islands across the water.

Best Time to Visit

May–Jun or Sep; Dingle town is busy Jul–Aug but the Slea Head loop road is manageable if you start before 9 am. The view from above Coumeenoole beach over the Blasket Islands is best in clear morning light.

Common questions

How long does the Slea Head Drive take?

The full Slea Head Drive loop from Dingle town is about 47km and takes 2–3 hours with stops. Major stops include Dunbeg Fort, the Fahan beehive huts, Slea Head viewpoint, Coumeenoole Beach, and the Great Blasket Island viewpoint. A half-day is comfortable; a full day if you add Dingle town lunch and the Conor Pass.

Can I visit the Blasket Islands from Dingle?

Ferries to Great Blasket Island operate from Dunquin Pier (on the Slea Head Drive), not from Dingle town itself. The crossing takes about 20 minutes. The island has walking trails and a café. Ferries are weather-dependent and operate from late April to October — book in advance in summer.

Is Dingle town worth visiting for a day?

Yes — Dingle is a working fishing port with excellent seafood restaurants, a vibrant arts scene, and Murphy's ice cream (genuinely exceptional). A full day can be spent in town and on the peninsula. The town is small enough to walk in 30 minutes but rewarding enough to spend two days in, using it as a base for west Kerry.

What is the Conor Pass and is it worth driving?

The Conor Pass is the highest mountain road in Ireland (456m), crossing the peninsula between Dingle and Tralee. It is dramatically steep with hairpin bends and sheer drops — the views from the top are extraordinary on a clear day. Not recommended for nervous drivers, large vehicles or in low cloud. If conditions are clear, it's one of the best drives in Ireland.
