Dingle Bay sits at the tip of Ireland's most westerly peninsula, the open Atlantic to the west and the dramatic sea cliffs of the Slea Head Drive rising above. A RIB (rigid inflatable boat) sea safari gives access to parts of this coast that cannot be seen from land — the sea stacks off Dunmore Head, caves beneath the cliffs near Coumeenoole, grey seal haul-out rocks, and the mouth of Blasket Sound where the tide runs hard between the mainland and the Great Blasket Island.
Dingle Bay was made famous internationally by Fungie the bottlenose dolphin, who lived in the bay from 1983 until his disappearance in 2020. The resident bottlenose dolphins — though no longer a single identifiable individual — still frequent the bay, and RIB trips commonly encounter them. Common dolphins and occasional minke whales are also seen in the outer bay in summer and autumn.
The RIB trips depart from Dingle town pier, typically running 1.5–2 hours. High-speed sections alternate with slower approaches to wildlife and sea features. Full wetsuits and lifejackets are provided. The combination of speed, spray and scenery makes this one of the most physically engaging visitor experiences in Kerry. Dingle town itself is the best base on the peninsula — good restaurants, accommodation and the connection to the Slea Head Drive.

Good to know
- →Book ahead — this is one of the most popular experiences on the Kerry coast and sells out in summer.
- →The trip is weather-dependent — check conditions the morning of your trip.
- →Wear layers under the wetsuit; even in summer the spray is cold at speed.
- →Combine with the Slea Head Drive (self-drive, same day) for a complete Dingle Peninsula day.
Best Time to Visit
Jun–Sep for best conditions and highest chance of dolphin encounters. Book at least 48 hours ahead in July/August.
