Connor Pass
Co. Kerry · 1 hour driving; 4–5 hours if hiking Brandon Mountain
Connor Pass (An Chonair in Irish) is the highest mountain pass in Ireland at 456 metres, crossing the ridge between Dingle town on the south side and Cloghane/Castlegregory on the north. The road is narrow, winding and steep — the summit section requires careful driving with passing places every hundred metres, and large vehicles should take an alternative route. Despite (or because of) this, it is one of the most dramatic drives in Ireland.
The summit viewpoint, accessible from a small car park, gives views in both directions simultaneously on clear days: north across the Castlegregory peninsula and the two loughs (Lough Adoon and Pedlars Lake) to the north coast; south over Dingle town, Dingle Harbour and the outer bay toward the Blasket Islands. The contrast between the two views — the exposed lake basin to the north, the sheltered harbour to the south — captures the character of the Dingle Peninsula well.
The walk up Brandon Mountain begins from the northern side of the pass near Cloghane — the Pilgrims' Route ascent is one of the best mountain hikes in Kerry and pairs naturally with the pass drive. The pass road itself (R560) is the more dramatic alternative to the main Dingle–Tralee road and takes 20 minutes longer but is significantly more rewarding. In low cloud or rain, the summit can be completely foggy — the view requires clear conditions to be effective.
Highlights
- Highest mountain pass in Ireland at 456 m — the road crosses the full ridge of the Dingle Peninsula
- Summit viewpoint gives simultaneous views north (Castlegregory lakes) and south (Dingle town and harbour)
- Free to drive — no charge, no booking, no visitor centre — just the road and the view
- Starting point for the Brandon Mountain (952 m) ascent via the Pilgrims' Route from Cloghane
- The R560 pass road is the dramatic alternative to the main Dingle–Tralee N86 — 20 minutes longer but incomparably better
Good to know
- →Drive north to south (Cloghane to Dingle) for the best descent into the harbour view.
- →Large vehicles and coaches should not attempt the pass — the road is genuinely narrow with minimal passing places.
- →Cloud regularly settles on the summit even on otherwise fine days — check conditions before committing the detour.
- →The summit car park is small; arrive early on summer weekends to find space.
- →Brandon Mountain ascent from the north side takes 4–5 hours return and is one of the best hikes in Kerry — bring proper footwear.
Best Time to Visit
May–Sep for clear summit views — cloud cover on the pass is very common even in summer. Morning drives give the best light south toward Dingle harbour. Combine with Slea Head Drive and Gallarus Oratory for a full Dingle Peninsula day.
