Inch Beach

Co. Kerry · 1–3 hours

Inch Beach is a 5 km sand spit extending into Dingle Bay from the southern shore of the Dingle Peninsula. The spit is formed by longshore drift — sand carried along the shore and deposited where the current slows — and creates a dramatic bar of dunes and beach that projects 5 km into the bay, almost meeting the Iveragh Peninsula on the far shore. The beach faces southwest and catches Atlantic swell consistently from spring through autumn, making it one of the best surf beaches on the west coast.

The landscape around Inch is exceptional — the Slieve Mish mountains rise immediately behind the beach, the Dingle Peninsula stretches west, and on clear days the Blasket Islands are visible offshore. This combination of mountain backdrop, Atlantic foreground and long flat beach made it a film location: Ryan's Daughter (1970) and Playboy of the Western World were both filmed here.

The pub and restaurant at the beach entrance — Sammy's — is one of the most visited in Kerry, less for the interior than for the view from its windows. It closes off-season but the beach is accessible year-round.

Highlights

  • 5 km of sand pushing into Dingle Bay — one of the longest beach bars in Ireland with consistent surf
  • Reliable Atlantic swell on the southwest-facing shore — surf lessons and board hire available in summer
  • Film location for Ryan's Daughter (1970) — David Lean chose this beach for its scale and backdrop
  • The Slieve Mish mountains rising immediately behind the beach — the landscape combination is unusual
  • Sammy's pub at the beach entrance — the first thing you see and a good reason to stay after swimming

Good to know

  • Parking at the beach entrance costs a few euro in summer — cash or card accepted.
  • Surf conditions are best on a rising tide with a southwest swell. A surf school operates from the car park in summer.
  • The beach is dog-friendly year-round — one of the few Irish beaches without seasonal restrictions.
  • Combine with the Dingle Peninsula Slea Head drive (30 min away) and Killarney for a full Kerry day.
  • Wind can be severe even on sunny days — the beach is fully exposed to the Atlantic.

Best Time to Visit

Jun–Aug for swimming and surfing — Inch is one of the few south-facing beaches in Kerry and catches good Atlantic swell. May and Sep are quieter and still warm enough for walking the full 5 km sand spit.

Common questions

Is Inch Beach good for swimming?

Inch Beach is a safe, supervised beach in summer with lifeguard cover. The water is cold by Mediterranean standards but the beach is sheltered enough to be popular from June to September. Surf conditions vary — it's a popular surf spot and lessons are available from the surf school at the entrance to the spit.

How long is Inch Beach and what facilities are there?

Inch Beach is a 5km sand spit pushing into Dingle Bay — one of the longest beaches in Ireland. Facilities include a surf school, a café-pub at the car park entrance (Sammy's Bar), and toilets. Parking costs a small daily fee. The beach is never crowded by European standards even in peak summer.

How far is Inch Beach from Dingle town?

Inch Beach is about 20km from Dingle on the R561 road toward Annascaul — approximately 25 minutes by car. It is a natural stop when driving the Dingle Peninsula loop from Tralee or when approaching Dingle from the east.

Is Inch Beach worth visiting?

The beach itself is exceptional — wide, clean and with views across the water to the Kerry mountains. But the setting is the real appeal: the beach sits at the end of a narrow tidal spit with estuary on one side and open Atlantic on the other. It is a classic Kerry scene and a fine place to spend an hour or a half-day.
