The Book of Kells is a richly illuminated manuscript Gospel Book produced by Celtic monks around 800 AD, most likely on the island of Iona off the Scottish coast before being brought to the monastery of Kells in Co. Meath for safekeeping during Viking raids. It contains the four Gospels in Latin, written on vellum (calfskin), with extraordinary full-page illustrations and intricate ornamentation on almost every page. The level of craft — particularly in the carpet pages, where geometric interlace fills entire pages without repetition — remains astounding 1,200 years later.
The manuscript is displayed in the Old Library of Trinity College Dublin, Ireland's oldest university (founded 1592). The exhibition walks through the history and techniques of medieval illumination before the manuscript itself, which is displayed open at two pages under protective glass. The pages are turned periodically — what you see depends on the day of your visit.
The real draw, beyond the manuscript, is the Long Room upstairs: a 65-metre barrel-vaulted library of carved oak and dark wood shelves holding 200,000 of the library's oldest books. Marble busts of philosophers and writers line the length of the room. The Irish harp used as the national symbol — the Brian Boru Harp — is also displayed here. It is one of the great rooms in Europe.

Good to know
- →Book online — the experience sells out regularly in summer and the queue for walk-ups can be 2 hours.
- →The Long Room is the main visual spectacle. If the Book of Kells itself is not open to an illuminated page on your visit, the Long Room alone justifies the ticket.
- →Trinity's campus is free to walk at any time — the front square, the Campanile and the cobbles are accessible without a ticket.
- →Early morning (9am opening) is the quietest time in the exhibition. By midday the Long Room is packed.
- →The Chester Beatty Library (5 min walk, free entry) displays manuscripts of equal or greater quality from across the world — visit both if you're interested in illuminated books.
Best Time to Visit
Pre-book online to skip the queue; open year-round. Arrive at opening (9:30 am) or after 4 pm. The Long Room library is as remarkable as the manuscript itself — allow 45–60 minutes total.
Getting There
Common questions
How much does the Book of Kells exhibition cost?
Adult tickets cost around €18–20 (2025) and include the Book of Kells illuminated manuscript exhibition and the Long Room library. Buy online in advance — door prices are higher and queues in peak season are significant. Early Access tickets allow entry before the main crowd arrives.
Is the Book of Kells worth visiting?
The manuscript itself is extraordinary — a ninth-century illuminated gospel of remarkable artistry, created by monks around 800 AD. Only one or two pages are displayed at a time under dim lighting. The Old Library's Long Room — an 18th-century library of 200,000 volumes with a barrel-vaulted ceiling — is often more impressive to visitors than the manuscript itself. Together they make a compelling 1.5-hour visit.
How long does the Book of Kells visit take?
The Book of Kells exhibition itself takes 30–45 minutes. The Long Room library adds another 30 minutes. Most visitors spend 1–1.5 hours in total. Trinity College's Front Square and Fellows' Square are worth a walk around outside — the cobbled campus is beautiful and free to enter.
