Best Time to Visit Ireland

Ireland · Planning

There is no truly bad time to visit Ireland, but there is a meaningful difference between months — and the honest answer is not simply "summer." Ireland's weather is notoriously variable regardless of season, but the light, the crowds and the practicalities change significantly through the year.

May and June are the best months for most visitors: the landscape is at its greenest, daylight extends past 10pm at midsummer, temperatures are mild (typically 14–16°C), and the peak summer crowds have not yet arrived. September is a close second — the weather is often more settled than in July, the light is golden, and prices drop sharply after the August school holidays.

July and August are peak season — the warmest months (occasionally reaching 20°C+) with the longest days, but also the most crowded roads, highest prices and most sold-out tours. If you visit in peak season, book everything in advance and start each day early.

Highlights

  • May–June: best overall — long daylight, green landscape, mild temperatures, pre-peak crowds
  • July–August: warmest and busiest — book accommodation, tours and ferries months ahead
  • September: often the most underrated month — settled weather, golden light, fewer tourists, better prices
  • October: dramatic autumn colours in Killarney and Wicklow; some island ferries and outdoor attractions close
  • November–February: off-season — few crowds, low prices, short days, highest chance of Atlantic storms on the west coast
  • March–April: transitional — unpredictable weather but lovely if you catch a clear spell; Skellig Michael boat trips don't start until mid-May

Local tips

  • Pack layers regardless of the month — Irish weather can produce four seasons in a day, especially on the west coast
  • The west coast (Galway, Clare, Kerry, Donegal) gets significantly more rain and wind than the east; plan accordingly
  • Skellig Michael is only open mid-May to early October — this is the key constraint for the best Kerry itineraries
  • Bank Holiday weekends in Ireland (May, June, August) bring large domestic crowds to popular spots — avoid or book ahead
  • Sunrise at Newgrange's winter solstice (21 December) is by lottery — apply in September for a December spot
  • Christmas and New Year in Ireland is genuinely festive — pubs are busy and towns are lively, though many tourist attractions close
