Skellig Michael

Co. Kerry · Full day (boat + time on island)

Skellig Michael is a pyramidal sea stack rising 218 metres from the Atlantic Ocean, 12 km west of the Iveragh Peninsula. On its southern peak, a community of monks established a hermitage in the sixth century that remained occupied for at least 600 years. The site — six beehive huts, two oratories, a small graveyard and a system of terraced stone steps cut into the rock — is the finest surviving example of early Christian monastic architecture in the Atlantic world. The monks who lived here chose the most extreme location available to them, in deliberate imitation of the desert fathers of Egypt.

The rock is reached by boat from Portmagee, Ballinskelligs or Caherciveen — an 11-km crossing that takes about 45 minutes in fair conditions but is frequently cancelled by swell. On landing, 618 stone steps cut into the cliff face lead to the monastery at the summit. The steps are original, uneven and unguarded. The ascent takes about 25 minutes; the monastery, when you arrive, is in extraordinary condition — the corbelled stone beehive cells have survived 1,400 years without mortar, their corbelled construction channelling rainwater off the walls.

Skellig Michael is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was used as the filming location for Luke Skywalker's island retreat in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

  • The crossing alone — 45 minutes on open Atlantic water, with the sea stack visible from 8 km before landing

Good to know

  • Boat trips book out 3–6 months in advance in summer. Book as soon as you know your dates — there is no other way to manage this.
  • Boats are cancelled regularly due to swell, wind or fog. Build 2 days of flexibility into your Kerry itinerary if Skellig is the priority.
  • Only 180 visitors are permitted on the island per day across all licensed operators. If your boat is cancelled, they will try to rebook you.
  • The steps are serious. Wear proper footwear, not sandals. People in poor physical condition find the ascent very difficult.
  • The Skellig Experience visitor centre on Valentia Island offers a boat trip around the rock without landing — a good alternative if the weather is poor or you can't get a landing permit.

Best Time to Visit

Seasonal landings May 15–Oct 15 only. Book a boat place months in advance — spaces are strictly limited by permit. The 618 steps are steep and exposed; sturdy footwear and waterproofs are essential. Atlantic weather can cancel boats without notice.

Common questions

How do I book a trip to Skellig Michael?

Boat trips depart from Portmagee and Ballinskelligs. Tickets must be booked months in advance — often selling out before the season opens in May. Book directly through one of the licensed OPW boat operators. Only 180 visitors per day are permitted to land, making it one of Ireland's most in-demand experiences.

When is Skellig Michael open to visitors?

The island is open from approximately mid-May to early October, weather permitting. Crossings are frequently cancelled due to rough seas, especially in May and September. The most reliable weather window is July and August. Always have a backup plan — cancelled crossings are common.

How difficult is the climb on Skellig Michael?

The climb is steep but manageable for most reasonably fit adults. Around 600 stone steps lead to the monastery at 185 metres. There are no handrails on much of the route and some sections are exposed. Sensible footwear is essential. Those with mobility difficulties, fear of heights, or young children should consider the Skellig Experience visitor centre on Valentia Island as an alternative.

How long is the boat crossing to Skellig Michael?

The crossing takes about 45–50 minutes from Portmagee. On the island you typically have 2–2.5 hours before returning. The total excursion is around 5–6 hours from Portmagee. The Atlantic crossing can be choppy — those prone to seasickness should take medication beforehand.

Is Skellig Michael worth the expense and effort?

For most visitors, yes — unambiguously. The sixth-century beehive hut monastery perched on a sea stack is unlike anything else in Europe. But it requires planning months in advance, costs around €80–100 per person, and is subject to cancellation by weather. If access is important to you, book early and build flexibility into your travel dates.
