7 Days in Ireland

Ireland · Itinerary

Seven days is the most common length for a first Ireland road trip — long enough to see the major highlights without feeling rushed, short enough to plan without needing to pick between everything.

The classic 7-day circuit runs Dublin → Galway → Cliffs of Moher → Killarney → Ring of Kerry → Cork, then back to Dublin or finishing at Cork Airport. It covers approximately 900km of driving, averaging 130km per day — manageable on Irish roads where speed limits are lower than they look.

The key to making seven days work is not trying to do too much in each place. Two nights in each base (Galway and Killarney) rather than one gives you proper mornings in the area without feeling like you're constantly packing and moving. Day 1 (Dublin) and the final day (Cork/travel) bookend the trip. The middle five days are the substance.

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Dublin — arrival

Arrive at Dublin Airport. The city centre is 30–45 minutes by Airlink express bus or taxi. Walk Grafton Street to St Stephen's Green in the evening, then head into the Liberties or Temple Bar for dinner and a pint.

2

Dublin city

Kilmainham Gaol (book timed entry in advance) or Guinness Storehouse in the morning. Trinity College and Book of Kells in the afternoon. Both are within walking distance of each other and most central hotels.

3

Dublin → Galway

2.5 hrs

Drive west on the M6. Stop at Clonmacnoise on the River Shannon — a 45-minute detour off the motorway — for the early medieval monastery largely unknown to international visitors. Arrive Galway by early afternoon and explore the Latin Quarter in the evening.

4

Aran Islands or Connemara

Option A: Ferry from Rossaveel (40 km west of Galway) to Aran Islands. Hire a bike on Inis Mór and cycle to Dún Aonghasa on its 100m cliff. Option B: Drive the N59 to Kylemore Abbey and Clifden — return via the Sky Road above the town for the best Atlantic views.

5

Cliffs of Moher + Burren → Killarney

~4 hrs total

Drive south from Galway to Cliffs of Moher (90 min) — arrive before 10am to beat tour buses. Walk the clifftop path west from the visitor centre. Drive the Burren coastal road south through Doolin and Lahinch to Ennis, then southwest to Killarney (2 hrs from Doolin). A long day — start early.

6

Killarney National Park

Gap of Dunloe in the morning by jaunting car or on foot. Ross Castle boat trip across the three lakes in the afternoon. Muckross House and Torc Waterfall on the way back into Killarney town.

7

Ring of Kerry → Cork/Airport

179 km loop

Drive the Ring of Kerry clockwise from Killarney (the coaches run anti-clockwise). Key stops: Ladies' View, Moll's Gap, Sneem, Waterville, Caherciveen. Allow 5–6 hours. If flying from Cork, continue from the Ring to Blarney Castle or Cobh on the way to Cork Airport (90 min from Killarney).

Highlights

  • Covers Ireland's main highlights — Dublin, Galway, Cliffs of Moher, Killarney and the Ring of Kerry — in one week
  • ~900 km total driving at an average of 130 km per day; very manageable on Irish roads
  • Two overnight bases (Galway and Killarney) give you proper mornings in each region rather than arriving late and leaving early
  • The Aran Islands or Connemara day is typically the most memorable; the Cliffs of Moher the most visually dramatic
  • Fly Dublin in, Cork out — no backtracking, maximum ground covered

Local tips

  • Drive the Ring of Kerry clockwise to avoid getting stuck behind tour buses (they run anti-clockwise) and for better views from the passenger side
  • Book Kilmainham Gaol and Skellig Michael (if extending) months in advance — both sell out far ahead
  • Pre-book Aran Island ferries in summer — Rossaveel sailings fill quickly on weekends
  • If you're flying in and out of Dublin, do the same circuit in reverse (Dublin → Cork → Kerry → Galway → Dublin) for equally good routing
  • Seven days is not enough for Donegal, Derry, the Causeway Coast or the southeast — leave them for a return trip
  • Avoid arriving in Killarney without a hotel booked on a July or August weekend — rooms go fast and prices spike

Getting there

Fly into Dublin (DUB) and out of Cork (ORK) for the classic one-way circuit — or start and finish Dublin if you prefer a loop. A hire car is essential. Pick up at Dublin Airport and drop off at Cork Airport for a one-way trip with no backtracking.
