Kilkenny Castle
Co. Kilkenny · 1.5–2 hours (castle only); 4–5 hours for the full city
Kilkenny Castle was built in 1195 by William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke, as part of the Norman conquest and settlement of Leinster. It became the principal seat of the Butler dynasty — the Earls and Dukes of Ormonde — who held it for 500 years. The Butlers were one of the most powerful Anglo-Norman families in Ireland and shaped the medieval city of Kilkenny around the castle. The castle was sold to the people of Kilkenny for the sum of £50 in 1967 and subsequently restored by the OPW.
The interior has been restored and open for guided tours. The most impressive room is the Long Gallery — a 19th-century addition with a hammer-beam ceiling painted with Celtic Revival designs and hung with a collection of Butler family portraits. The library and bedrooms have been restored to their 19th-century appearance. The castle grounds, including the extensive parkland behind, are free to access at all times.
Kilkenny city is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Ireland. The main street (High Street/Parliament Street) has a well-maintained medieval street pattern with several significant buildings: St Canice's Cathedral (13th century, with a climbable 9th-century round tower beside it), Rothe House (Elizabethan merchant's house) and the Black Abbey (Dominican priory). The city is known for its food and craft scene.
