Sliabh Liag Boat Trip

Co. Donegal · 1 hour (boat trip)

The Slieve League cliffs rise 601 metres from the sea on the southwest Donegal coast, making them the tallest accessible sea cliffs in Europe. Most visitors see them from the clifftop path and viewpoints at Bunglass — a genuinely dramatic perspective. The boat trip from Teelin adds a completely different view: you approach from the sea, looking up at the full height of the cliff face rising above you, the rock striped in red, ochre and grey, the waterfalls dropping from the clifftop to the sea.

Sliabh Liag Boat Trips operates from Teelin harbour, a small fishing village 4 km from the main cliff viewpoint. Trips run when sea conditions allow — this is an exposed Atlantic coast and boat trips are dependent on weather and swell. The boat passes under the cliffs at Bunglass, into the cave systems at the base, and gives views of wildlife including seals, basking sharks (in season) and seabirds on the cliff ledges. The trip takes about an hour.

Teelin village is worth 20 minutes before or after the boat trip — there is a small pier with fishing boats and views across Teelin Bay toward Killybegs. The best combination is to drive to the Bunglass viewpoint first to see the cliffs from above, then take the boat to see them from below.

Highlights

  • Boat trip under the 601-metre sea cliffs — the perspective from sea level is impossible from the clifftop
  • Cave systems, seal colonies and seabirds on the cliff face, visible at close range from the boat
  • Operates from Teelin harbour — the most characterful fishing village on the southwest Donegal coast
  • Combine with the Bunglass clifftop view for both perspectives on the highest accessible sea cliffs in Europe

Good to know

  • Trips are weather-dependent — book then check the morning of for cancellations in unsettled weather.
  • Dress warmly even in summer — at sea level in Donegal Bay, wind chill is significant.
  • Drive to Bunglass first (15 min from Teelin) for the clifftop view before taking the boat from below.
  • Killybegs (12 km east) is Ireland's largest fishing port and a good lunch stop before or after.
