Glengesh Pass

Co. Donegal · 30 min drive (add stops)

Glengesh Pass is a narrow mountain road that climbs to 300 metres through the Slieve Tooey range in southwest Donegal, connecting the tweed town of Ardara with the remote Glencolmcille valley on the far side. The road is single-track in places and the scenery is raw — blanket bog, bare rock, and the Atlantic visible behind as the road climbs west. At the summit the view opens suddenly: the valley floor below, the glen descending toward the coast, and in clear conditions the outline of Slieve League to the south.

The descent on the western side is a series of hairpin bends into the valley floor, giving the pass a genuine drama that few mountain roads in Ireland can match. The road is perfectly driveable in a standard car, but requires care and a willingness to reverse into passing places when meeting oncoming traffic. Allow 20 minutes for the transit, more if you stop at the viewpoint near the summit.

Glengesh Pass sits naturally on the route between Ardara (known for traditional Donegal tweed weaving) and Glencolmcille Folk Village. The combination of the pass drive, the folk village, and the sea stacks at Glencolmcille bay makes for one of the most complete half-days in Donegal.

Highlights

  • 300-metre mountain pass with summit view over the Glencolmcille valley — opens suddenly and dramatically
  • Series of hairpin bends on the western descent — one of the finest scenic drives in Donegal
  • On the route between Ardara (tweed) and Glencolmcille Folk Village — natural inclusion on any Donegal itinerary
  • Free scenic drive — no charge, no facilities, just empty mountain road

Good to know

  • The road is single-track — drive slowly and be prepared to reverse. Not for nervous drivers.
  • The viewpoint is near the summit on the eastern approach — there is a small pull-in on the right.
  • Best driven west to east: descend into Ardara with the valley views ahead of you.
  • Ardara has excellent traditional music pubs (Nancy's Bar is famous) and Harris Tweed shops — stop for lunch.

Best Time to Visit

Apr–Oct for dry roads and visibility. Avoid in heavy fog. Autumn colours on the bog in September–October are outstanding.
