Mullaghmore Head

Co. Sligo · 1–2 hours

Mullaghmore Head is a small peninsula extending into Donegal Bay on the Sligo coast, enclosing a sheltered horseshoe harbour and village. The setting is one of the most photogenic on the Wild Atlantic Way: the harbour at low tide, the castle above the beach, Benbulben visible across the bay and the cliffs of Donegal to the north. It takes less than an hour to walk the headland loop, but most people spend the best part of a morning here.

Classiebawn Castle, built in 1874 for Viscount Palmerston and later the Irish home of Lord Louis Mountbatten, rises above the beach on the southern approach to the village. It was at Mullaghmore that Mountbatten was killed in 1979 when the IRA detonated a bomb on his fishing boat in the harbour. The castle is private, but visible from the public road and the headland walk.

In winter, Mullaghmore becomes famous for a different reason: its reef break, which only works in significant Atlantic swells, produces waves of 10–15 metres that attract the world's best big-wave surfers. Watching a big-wave session here (typically November to February, dependent on swell) is one of the most extraordinary free spectacles in Irish sport.

Highlights

  • Horseshoe harbour village with Classiebawn Castle — one of the most photogenic headlands on the Wild Atlantic Way
  • On large winter swells, the Mullaghmore reef produces 10–15 m big waves attracting world-class big-wave surfers
  • Benbulben visible across Donegal Bay to the east; Donegal cliffs visible to the north
  • Short headland loop walk (under 1 hour) with dramatic coastal views in both directions

Good to know

  • Big-wave sessions happen unpredictably Nov–Feb — check surf forecast sites if you want to time a visit.
  • The harbour café and the Eithna's restaurant are both worth a stop — small village but good food.
  • Classiebawn Castle is private property — view from the road and beach only.
  • Combine Mullaghmore with Glencar Waterfall and Carrowmore Cemetery for a full Sligo north circuit.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round. Summer for the harbour and walking; Nov–Feb for big-wave spectating. Sunset here over Donegal Bay is exceptional in autumn.
