Benbulben

Co. Sligo · 1–5 hours depending on activity

Benbulben (526 m) is a flat-topped limestone mountain above the north Sligo coast, part of the Dartry range. Its profile — a near-vertical cliff face dropping to steep scree slopes and then level farmland — is instantly recognisable and dominates the landscape from Sligo Bay westward to Bundoran. The mountain takes its name from the Old Irish Binn Ghulbain, meaning "peak of the gullet" — a reference to the shape of the cliffs.

The mountain is associated above all with W.B. Yeats, who spent much of his childhood in the Sligo area and returned repeatedly throughout his life. His poem "Under Ben Bulben" contains the instruction for his own burial: "Under bare Ben Bulben's head / In Drumcliffe churchyard Yeats is laid." He died in France in 1939 and was reinterred in Drumcliffe churchyard at the base of the mountain in 1948, as he requested. The simple grave and headstone are a significant literary pilgrimage site.

The summit plateau is accessible on foot from several points — the most popular routes start from near Grange village to the northwest. The terrain is technical in places and the summit is exposed; experienced hillwalkers can complete a circuit in 4–5 hours. The lower slopes are freely walkable along forestry tracks.

Highlights

  • Benbulben's vertical profile rising above Sligo Bay — one of Ireland's most distinctive and photographed mountain silhouettes
  • W.B. Yeats' grave at Drumcliffe churchyard (free) — the poet chose this spot in his final poem and was buried here in 1948
  • The summit plateau — high-grade walking with views to Donegal and the Atlantic on clear days
  • Rare alpine flora on the limestone terraces — including the Benbulben saxifrage, found only here in Ireland
  • The Dartry landscape: a range of flat-topped limestone mountains running from Benbulben west toward Donegal

Good to know

  • Yeats' grave at Drumcliffe is free and is directly on the N15 — visit it regardless of whether you climb the mountain.
  • The standard hillwalking routes are for experienced walkers — the cliff face is not for casual walkers.
  • The forest tracks on the lower slopes are accessible to all and give the best views of the cliff profile.
  • Sligo town (15 min drive) has a good Yeats Trail with several related sites including the Yeats Society and the County Museum.
  • Rosses Point, a beach village 8 km from Sligo town, has dramatic views of Benbulben from the water — worth the detour.

Best Time to Visit

Jun–Aug for the summit ridge walk (6 hours round trip from Gortarowey car park); the route is exposed and requires navigation confidence in mist. May–Jun is best for clear views over Donegal Bay. Drumcliffe churchyard and the Yeats grave are accessible and rewarding at any time of year.

Common questions

Can I climb Benbulben?

Benbulben can be climbed but the ascent is steep, boggy and requires good footwear. The most common approach is from the Gortarowey car park on the north side — a 3–4 hour round trip. The summit plateau is spectacular but navigation in mist is tricky. The flat-topped summit is not technical climbing but is a serious hill walk. Do not attempt in heavy rain or poor visibility.

Where is W.B. Yeats buried near Benbulben?

Yeats is buried in the churchyard of St Columba's Church of Ireland at Drumcliffe, directly below the north face of Benbulben on the N15 road — about 8km north of Sligo town. His grave is in the churchyard to the left of the church door. The epitaph he composed — "Cast a cold eye / On life, on death. / Horseman, pass by!" — is carved on the headstone.

Is Benbulben visible from Sligo town?

Yes — Benbulben dominates the horizon north of Sligo town and is visible from the town centre, the bay, and much of the surrounding countryside. The flat-topped profile is unmistakable and instantly recognisable as the mountain that defined the landscape of Yeats's poetry.

What else is there to see near Benbulben?

Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is 6km south of Sligo town. Knocknarea hill with Queen Maeve's Cairn is visible to the west. Rosses Point, a beach with views of Benbulben, is 8km from Sligo. Lissadell House — the Georgian mansion where Yeats was a frequent guest — is on the coastal road north of Drumcliffe.
