Killary Sheep Farm

Co. Galway · 1.5–2 hours

Killary Sheep Farm sits on the southern shore of Killary Fjord, Ireland's only true fjord, with the Maamturk Mountains rising behind and the fjord stretching west toward the Atlantic. Tom Nee, a fourth-generation farmer, works this land with his border collies, and the daily visitor experience gives genuine access to how a Connemara hill farm runs — sheep handling, sheepdog demonstrations, shearing shows and lamb feeding depending on the season.

The demonstrations are led by the farm family and are relaxed and interactive. The sheepdog trials — watching a dog work a flock across rough hillside — are the highlight for most visitors, and genuinely skilled. Children can bottle-feed lambs in spring. The setting on the fjord gives the experience a backdrop that few farm attractions anywhere can match.

The farm is about 3 km from Leenane village along the south shore of the fjord. Combine it with the Killary Fjord boat cruise (which leaves from Leenane) and lunch in the village for a half-day. The drive along the fjord shore from Leenane to the farm is itself worth doing slowly — the views across the water to the Mayo side are among the best in Connacht.

Highlights

  • Working hill sheep farm with live sheepdog demonstrations on the shores of Killary Fjord
  • Shearing, lamb feeding and farm interaction — a real farm, not a heritage reconstruction
  • One of the finest natural settings for any Irish visitor experience — fjord and mountains
  • Led by the farm family — genuinely local, unhurried and good with children

Good to know

  • Book ahead in summer — the farm limits visitor numbers to keep demonstrations genuine.
  • Combine with the Killary Fjord cruise from Leenane for a half-day on the fjord.
  • Lamb feeding is seasonal (March–May) — check what's on before visiting with young children.
  • The road along the south fjord shore from Leenane is spectacular and slow — give it time.

Best Time to Visit

Apr–Oct. Spring (March–May) for lambing season and the most active farm experience. Summer for sheepdog demonstrations at full schedule.
