The National Museum of Ireland — Country Life opened in 2001 at Turlough Park, a Victorian country house estate 8 km outside Castlebar. The purpose-built museum building (designed by Ahrends Burton and Koralek) houses one of Europe's finest collections of rural material culture, with over 50,000 objects covering Irish country life from 1850 to 2000. Entry is free.
The permanent collection is organised thematically: making a living (agriculture, fishing, crafts), home and family life, community (fairs, patterns, pilgrimage), and beliefs and traditions. The textile collection is particularly strong, with a comprehensive archive of Irish linen, wool and traditional clothing. The domestic objects — butter churns, griddle irons, rush lights, spinning wheels — represent the everyday reality of rural Ireland across 150 years of rapid change.
The Victorian house and grounds at Turlough Park are also open and worth exploring — the walled garden, the parkland walking trail (about 3 km), and the views across Lough Lannagh add an hour to any visit. The museum has a café and good shop. Combined with Westport (20 km west) or Knock (20 km east), it makes an excellent rainy-day destination on a Mayo itinerary.
