The Irish National Heritage Park at Ferrycarrig, 4 km from Wexford town, presents 9,000 years of Irish history through full-scale reconstructed settlements in a 35-acre woodland park beside the River Slaney. The park traces continuous human occupation of Ireland from the Mesolithic period (c. 7000 BC) through to the Norman fortifications of the 12th century, with accurately reconstructed lake dwellings, ring forts, early Christian monastic settlements, Viking boatyard and Norman motte.
The quality of the reconstructions is generally high — several of the structures have been built using experimental archaeology methods that tested what materials and tools were actually available in each period. The Viking boatyard, which includes a full-size replica longship under construction, is the most dramatic single exhibit. The ring fort section, with its souterrain (underground passage), gives a clear sense of how an early medieval farmstead was organised.
The park is particularly effective for families with children — the path through the woods moves through human history at walking pace, and the reconstructed settlements are accessible and tactile. Guided tours run in summer and are worth taking for the contextual information they add to the physical structures. The riverside location adds to the atmosphere; the tidal Slaney is visible between the trees throughout the walk.
