Hook Head Lighthouse

Co. Wexford · 1–1.5 hours

Hook Lighthouse stands at the southern tip of the Hook Peninsula in County Wexford, where the mouth of Waterford Harbour meets the open sea. The tower has been guiding ships here continuously for more than 800 years — Augustinian monks maintained a fire beacon on this rock from around 1172, when William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, is credited with establishing the permanent structure. The claim that it is one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world is well-founded; the lower courses of the current tower are medieval stonework.

The lighthouse is 35 metres tall, with 115 steps from the base to the lantern room. Entry is by guided tour only — tours depart throughout the day and take around 45 minutes. The guides are good: the history of the light, the mechanics of how it operated before electrification, and the stories of the wrecks on the rocks below are all covered. The light itself was automated in 1996; there are no keepers. From the top the view takes in Waterford Harbour to the north, the Saltee Islands to the east and the fossil-rich limestone cliffs of the Hook Head coastline in both directions.

The phrase "by Hook or by Crooke" may derive from Cromwell's alleged threat to take Waterford Harbour by landing either at Hook Head or at Crooke, a village on the opposite bank. Historians are sceptical about the attribution, but the phrase existed before Cromwell and the connection with this specific location has entered local identity firmly enough to appear on most regional tourism materials. Factually accurate or not, it makes for a good story at the top of the tower.

Hook Head pairs naturally with the Waterford Viking Triangle (45 min north by road) and the Dunbrody Famine Ship in New Ross (1 hour north). A full day covering all three is a coherent SE Ireland itinerary that almost no tourist does, which means it tends to be quiet.

  • The sea safari by RIB from Dunmore East gives the best external view of the tower from the water — book through GYG.
  • The café at the lighthouse base is good for a stop; the car park is large and free.
