Fanad Head Lighthouse stands on a rocky headland at the northern tip of the Fanad Peninsula in County Donegal, where Lough Swilly meets the open Atlantic. The lighthouse was established in 1817 in response to the wreck of the HMS Saldanha in 1811 — the frigate ran aground on the rocks with the loss of all aboard except the captain's parrot, which was found clinging to the wreck days later. The lighthouse has been in continuous operation since.
The current lighthouse tower (built 1820) is a white-painted stone structure rising from a complex of keepers' cottages, fog signal buildings and storage facilities. The keeper's cottages have been converted into self-catering accommodation, which is available to rent from the Commissioners of Irish Lights. The lighthouse itself operates automatically; tours of the tower run in summer by local guides.
Fanad Head is on the Wild Atlantic Way route through Donegal and is one of the most photographed lighthouses in Ireland, partly for its location — the combination of cliff, sea stack and white tower against the Atlantic horizon creates a dramatic composition in good light. The surrounding coastline is remote and largely undeveloped, with small beaches accessible on foot from the lighthouse car park.

What else is near Fanad Head?
Portsalon beach — a Blue Flag beach at the southern end of the Fanad Peninsula — is one of Donegal's finest and about 10km from the lighthouse. Rathmullan on the opposite (Lough Swilly) shore has a Napoleonic-era fort and a hotel with excellent seafood. The Knockalla Mountains between Portsalon and Fanad Head give outstanding views across Lough Swilly.
