Courtmacsherry sits at the head of a tidal estuary on the south Cork coast between Clonakilty and Kinsale, a small village with a pier that gives access to the whale-rich waters of the Celtic Sea. The same seasonal concentration of fish that draws whales to Baltimore also affects the waters around Seven Heads and Courtmacsherry Bay, and humpback whales in particular have been reliably sighted in this area from September through November.
Atlantic Whale & Wildlife Tours, run by Mark and Patricia Gannon, operates from Courtmacsherry pier, giving visitors based in the Clonakilty or Bandon area an option without the drive to Baltimore. The trips are similar in length and format — 3–4 hours, naturalist-guided, with rigid inflatable boats that can get close to wildlife. The humpback whale population that feeds in these waters is one of the most studied in the northeast Atlantic; individuals are identified by dorsal fin and fluke patterns and many are known animals on return visits each season.
Courtmacsherry is one of the most undervisited villages on the Cork coast — a pretty estuary village with painted houses and a wide sandy beach at low tide. The Michael Collins Memorial Farm and Woodfield (where Collins was born) is 20 km northwest near Clonakilty.
