Dublin Castle

Co. Dublin · 1.5–2 hours

Dublin Castle has occupied the same site since the construction of the Norman fortification ordered by King John of England in 1204. It was the administrative centre of British rule in Ireland from the 13th century until Irish independence in 1922, when the keys were handed over to Michael Collins. The castle is not one building but a complex of structures accumulated over seven centuries: the surviving medieval Record Tower, Georgian State Apartments, a Victorian chapel, an underground museum built in the excavated castle foundations, and formal gardens.

The State Apartments are the visual centrepiece — a series of 18th-century rooms used for state occasions and EU Presidency meetings when Ireland holds the rotating chair. The Throne Room (1740), St Patrick's Hall (where Irish Presidents are inaugurated), and the Battle Axe Landing are the highlights. The chapel was designed by Francis Johnston in Gothic Revival style and rebuilt several times; the plasterwork ceiling is extraordinary.

The undercroft museum is a genuinely surprising exhibit: beneath the castle courtyards lie the foundations of the original Norman tower, sections of the Viking longphort that preceded it, and the courses of the River Poddle that once filled the castle moat. The city grew over all of this; the basement cuts through 1,000 years of stratigraphy.

Highlights

  • State Apartments — 18th-century ceremonial rooms including the Throne Room and St Patrick's Hall where Presidents are inaugurated
  • Medieval undercroft — excavated foundations revealing the Viking longphort, Norman tower and the original River Poddle
  • Dublin Castle Chapel Royal — Gothic Revival interior with 90 carved heads of saints and monarchs on the exterior
  • The Record Tower — the only surviving medieval tower from the 13th-century Norman castle
  • 534,000 visitors in 2024 — the most visited OPW site in Ireland, and free on Heritage Week

Good to know

  • Guided tours run regularly and are recommended — the undercroft is only accessible on a tour.
  • The gardens between the state buildings are free to access and a pleasant shortcut from Dame Street to the Liberties.
  • The Chester Beatty Library (free entry) is in the castle grounds — one of the world's finest collections of illuminated manuscripts and Asian art.
  • The Chapel Royal exterior is the most photogenic element and can be seen from the Upper Yard for free.
  • Dublin Castle is 5 minutes' walk from Trinity College — combine both in a morning.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round; the State Apartments require a timed guided tour — book ahead in summer. The medieval undercroft (Viking-era foundations visible below the castle yard) is included in the tour and is the most surprising element.

Common questions

How much does Dublin Castle cost?

Guided tours of the State Apartments cost around €12 adults (2025). The castle grounds, exterior courtyards and the Chester Beatty Library (on the grounds, with an exceptional collection of Islamic, East Asian and Western manuscripts) are free to visit. The Undercroft — excavated Norman foundations visible beneath the Upper Yard — is included in the guided tour.

What can I see at Dublin Castle?

The State Apartments are the main event: a series of Georgian reception rooms including the St Patrick's Hall (where Irish presidents are inaugurated), the Throne Room and the Drawing Rooms, all with original Georgian furnishings and decoration. The 13th-century Record Tower is the sole surviving medieval tower. The Underground Viking foundations revealed during 1960s excavations are accessible on the guided tour.

How long should I spend at Dublin Castle?

A guided tour of the State Apartments takes about 1 hour. Add 30 minutes for the Chester Beatty Library (free, one of the finest manuscript collections in the world) and 30 minutes to walk the grounds. A 2-hour visit covers everything properly.

Is Dublin Castle easy to reach?

Yes — Dublin Castle is in the heart of the old city, about a 10-minute walk from Dame Street or Trinity College. Dame Street Luas stop and the College Green bus stops are the nearest public transport. It is in the same area as City Hall, Christ Church Cathedral and the Liberties — all worth combining on a historical Dublin walking day.
