Muckross House is a large Victorian mansion built in 1843 on the Muckross Peninsula, within what is now Killarney National Park. The house was built by Henry Arthur Herbert and significantly extended in anticipation of Queen Victoria's visit in 1861 — the monarch stayed for three days in August of that year, setting a trend for the Anglo-Irish aristocracy to build on the scale and style of her approval. The house was donated to the Irish state in 1932 and is now managed by the Office of Public Works.
The guided house tour takes visitors through the Victorian kitchens, the main reception rooms, the library and the bedrooms on the ground and first floors — the furniture and fittings are largely original or period-appropriate. The basement kitchen complex is among the best-preserved Victorian service areas in Ireland. The lakeside gardens surrounding the house are free to enter and extend to the shores of Muckross Lake; the formal Italian garden on the south side, the walled kitchen garden, and the rhododendron woodland walks are all part of the grounds.
Muckross Traditional Farms, located 3 km from the main house, is a separate living history attraction where working farmsteads recreate Irish rural life from the 1930s–1950s — before electrification reached rural Kerry. It requires separate admission but a combined ticket is available. The farms are often less visited than the house and genuinely well done. Muckross is 5 km from Killarney town on the Kenmare road (N71); jaunting cars (horse-drawn carriages) run between Killarney town and the house in summer.
