Marble Arch Caves

Co. Fermanagh · 1.5–2 hours (cave tour + geopark)

Marble Arch Caves is a showcave system in the UNESCO Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark, on the southern slopes of Cuilcagh Mountain in County Fermanagh. The caves were formed over millions of years by rainwater dissolving the carboniferous limestone and cutting river passages through the rock. The guided tour (75 minutes) takes visitors through a series of decorated caverns — stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and cave coral formations — via underground rivers and walkways.

The experience begins with a short boat journey along an underground river before the walking tour proceeds through the main caverns. The Marble Arch — the natural stone arch above the cave exit that gives the system its name — is a feature visible from the outside; the underground marble arch within the caves is the most dramatic single feature of the tour. Tour numbers are limited; advance booking is strongly recommended in summer when the site regularly sells out.

The wider geopark extends across the border into Cavan and includes Cuilcagh Mountain — the "stairway to heaven" boardwalk ascent to Cuilcagh's plateau top is one of the most popular mountain walks in the northwest. Enniskillen (30 minutes from the caves) is the natural base: Enniskillen Castle, the town's excellent museum, and the Lough Erne resort hotels are all there. The Marble Arch Caves are 45 minutes from Bundoran on the Donegal coast and can be combined with a Slieve League or Donegal day.

Highlights

  • UNESCO Global Geopark — guided 75-minute underground tour through stalactites, underground rivers and decorated caverns
  • Underground boat section — the tour begins with a short boat journey along a subterranean river
  • Cuilcagh Mountain boardwalk (the "stairway to heaven") starts from the geopark — one of the most popular mountain walks in the northwest
  • Cross-border geopark covering Fermanagh and Cavan — 75,000 acres of karst landscape
  • Book in advance — tours sell out regularly in summer and wet weather can close the caves at short notice

Good to know

  • Book in advance — the cave system can close when river levels rise after heavy rain, and summer demand exceeds walk-in capacity.
  • Wear layers and bring a jacket — the cave temperature stays at around 10°C regardless of outside temperature.
  • The Cuilcagh Mountain boardwalk ("stairway to heaven") ascent from the geopark car park takes 3–4 hours return — a genuinely excellent mountain walk.
  • Enniskillen (30 min east) is the best base — Lough Erne Resort and Killyhevlin Hotel are both excellent.
  • The caves are 45 min from Bundoran and 1 hr from Slieve League — useful for a Fermanagh detour on a Donegal circuit.

Best Time to Visit

Apr–Oct for reliable opening. Book in advance in summer — tours sell out and the caves can close after heavy rain. Combine with Cuilcagh Mountain walk (starts in the same car park) for a full day.
