Malahide Castle is a medieval tower house on the coast north of Dublin, in the village of Malahide. The original construction dates from the 12th century; the building was extended significantly in the 14th and 15th centuries and is now a substantial five-storey structure surrounded by parkland. It was the seat of the Talbot family from 1185 until 1973 — nearly 800 years of continuous occupation by a single family, interrupted only during the Cromwellian period (1649–1660) when the Talbots' Catholic faith led to their dispossession.
The castle's interior retains a significant collection of Irish portrait paintings, period furniture and tapestries largely from the Talbot era. Guided tours run throughout the day and take approximately 45 minutes. The family portraits in the Great Hall, the Oak Room (carved panelling from the late 17th century) and the Drawing Room are the highlights. A notable footnote: according to tradition, 14 members of the Talbot family breakfasted in the Great Hall on the morning of the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 — none of them returned alive.
The 22-acre walled gardens surrounding the castle are separately accessible and include a restored rose garden, a yew garden and a Chinese garden developed in the 1970s. The village of Malahide (5 minutes' walk) has excellent restaurants and a small harbour — the Dart suburban rail line connects Malahide directly to Dublin city centre in 25 minutes. The castle is 15 minutes from Dublin Airport, making it a very easy first or last stop on an Ireland trip.
