Bunratty Castle is a large tower house built in 1425 near the mouth of the River Ratty in County Clare, 15 km from Limerick city and 2 km from Shannon Airport. The castle was restored in the 1950s and 1960s to create one of the most complete medieval castle interiors in Ireland, furnished with an exceptional collection of 14th- to 17th-century European furniture and artefacts. The great hall, the earl's bedroom, the solar and the various guardrooms all retain original furnishings.
The Folk Park adjoining the castle is a reconstructed 19th-century Irish village with over 30 historical structures moved from their original locations — farmhouses, cottages, a village street with a pub, a school, a post office and a doctor's surgery. Costumed interpreters demonstrate traditional crafts and occupations. The park occupies 26 acres and takes 2–3 hours to explore.
The Medieval Banquets at Bunratty are a long-running evening experience: a four-course meal in the castle great hall with entertainment from a resident troupe performing traditional music, poetry and historical re-enactment. The format is unchanged since the 1960s and divides opinion — deeply unfashionable for some, an entertaining piece of theatrical Ireland for others.

Getting There
Common questions
What is included in Bunratty Castle entry?
Entry (around €20 adults, 2025) covers the castle interior, the adjacent Bunratty Folk Park — a recreated 19th-century Irish village with over 30 buildings — and the grounds. The Folk Park alone justifies the entry price: it includes a working forge, farmhouses, a school and a post office, all furnished with period artefacts. Allow at least 3 hours.
Is Bunratty Castle convenient from Shannon Airport?
Bunratty Castle is 2km from Shannon Airport — about 4 minutes by car. It is almost universally the first or last stop for visitors flying through Shannon. This is not a reason to skip it; the castle and folk park are genuinely good. If arriving early or departing late from Shannon, Bunratty is an ideal way to start or end an Ireland trip.
What are the medieval banquets at Bunratty?
Bunratty hosts medieval banquets in the castle great hall most evenings — a dinner experience with entertainment, period costume, traditional music and storytelling. Tickets cost around €69–79 per person and must be booked in advance. The experience is theatrical and popular with groups. A more traditional Irish night (Bunratty Traditional Irish Night) runs in the folk park.
How long should I spend at Bunratty?
Three to four hours covers the castle interior and the full folk park properly. The castle itself takes about 45 minutes. The folk park adds 1.5–2 hours if you walk through all the structures. There is a café in the folk park and a pub (Durty Nelly's) next to the castle entrance that has been there since 1620.
